Iron Management To Improve Color and Performance in Veal Calves

چکیده
Poor Color Costs the Veal Industry Millions According to the 1998 National Veal Quality Audit, poor color costs the veal industry $10.29 for every calf produced $6 million in 1998! This estimate was based on the cost of commonly occurring dark or very dark carcasses. There are two primary causes of dark color in veal meat: excessive iron supplementation and inadequate ventilation. This article will focus on iron management to improve calf performance and improve veal color.

The provision of solid feeds to veal calves: I. Growth performance, forestomach development, and carcass and meat quality.
Growth performance, forestomach development, and carcass and meat quality of veal calves fed a milk replacer diet (Control) were compared to those obtained from calves fed the same liquid diet plus 250 g x calf(-1) x d(-1) of dried beet pulp or wheat straw. Three groups of 46 Polish Friesian calves, balanced according to initial BW, were assigned to the three dietary treatments in a fattening t...

I N veal production, the color of the fresh meat is an important factor affecting its quality. The consumer considers that the light pink color of the carcass, which is associated with the feeding of milk, will reflect a specific taste. The paleness of the muscle tissue is actually developed by an exclusive milk feeding and results from a state of anemia due to the low iron content of the milk ...
متن کاملAn HSUS Report: The Welfare of Animals in the Veal Industry
Intensive confinement of calves raised for veal has long raised pointed concerns regarding the animals’ welfare. Traditional production practices include individually isolating calves in narrow wooden stalls or pens, which severely restrict movement, feeding the animals an all-liquid diet deliberately low in iron, and prematurely weaning the animals. Stressful conditions lead to a high incidenc...

متن کاملThe incorporation of solubilized wheat proteins in milk replacers for veal calves: effects on growth performance and muscle oxidative capacity.
Replacement of skim milk proteins by solubilized wheat protein (SWP) in milk replacers for veal calves would contribute to the reduction in feeding costs. The occurrence of metabolic disorders has, however, been reported. Forty-two male calves received one of three treatments over 140 days: a control diet, a diet containing SWP without or with branched-chain amino acid supplementation. Liveweig...
